Description
Oregano oil – wild marjoram
Oregano is an aromatic spice plant that originates from the mountains of Mediterranean countries. This Mediterranean herb was already known in ancient times. It was also mentioned in many old herbal books, often under the meaningful name ‘Wohlgemuth’. Origanum vulgare – this is the scientific name of oregano.
Composition and occurrence of oregano (oil)
As far as the composition of oregano oil is concerned, up to 56 different compounds have been identified. Not all species of the genus Origanum have the same proportion of carvacrol and thymol. In addition to the species, the climate, altitude and harvest time are other factors that determine the composition of the oil.
The species with the highest proportion of carvacrol grows in the Mediterranean region and Turkey and is called Origanum minutiflorum. This species in particular produces a unique synergy due to the balance of ingredients. Steam distillation has proven to be the best method for extracting antioxidant properties and achieving the highest phenolic content.
Clinically studied applications and effects
Some of its interesting potential clinical applications have been studied quite thoroughly. Wild oregano is known for its strong antimicrobial, antibiotic, fungicidal, antioxidant and antiviral properties. It can be used internally and externally and is helpful in the prevention and treatment of bacterial and viral infections, parasites, candidiasis, athlete’s foot, insect bites and cold sores.
One study tested the effect of oregano oil on parasites in humans, with very positive results, as the parasites disappeared in all test subjects, as well as other gastrointestinal symptoms in 7 out of 11 people. Thanks to the particularly gentle, natural production process without artificial additives, one litre of oregano oil is obtained by steam distillation from 50 kg of oregano leaves. The phenols carvacrol and thymol, as well as β -fenchol alcohol and γ -terpinene have been identified as the most effective ingredients of oregano oil. Pure oregano oil has a very intense flavour.
